TruePrepper is a collection of prepping guides, articles, and reviews by survival experts since 2016. Our Mission: To spread and normalize prepping by getting more people involved with their preparedness. Have a question? Just ask.
Then there are other costs like vacuum pump oil ($16 per year) and any accessories you buy. We have purchased additional trays, tray lids and tray separators.
And then there’s the noise. The freeze dryer is not exactly whisper-quiet so having it running in your kitchen would be very disruptive.
The capacity of the freeze dryer isn’t necessarily how much you can fit inside, but also includes how long it takes to freeze-dry a batch. The vacuum pump, condenser, and compressor strength can all make a difference since they reduce process time rather than increase vacuum chamber size.
While not absolutely necessary for all operations, temperature monitoring tools can significantly improve the quality and consistency of freeze-dried products.
We did not include those riser racks in our capacity calculations and comparison since they aren’t true tray capacity.
Plus, that one-year full warranty and limited extended coverage on essential parts give us extra peace of mind.
You can get better energy efficiency by getting a larger capacity model from Harvest Right or another brand, but you won’t be coming anywhere near this price point. This model is also still relatively small and can fit on a counter or a cart.
Note: Warranty does not cover the logistical costs of repair, such as the fees needed to send products to Harvest Right or have technical supp ort conduct an on-site inspection. Likewise, misuse or neglect are not covered by the warranty.
They are not small. So you cannot expect to just put it on the kitchen counter and forget about it. A lot of people put them on mobile carts and move them around as needed. But whatever the case, make sure your home can accommodate the freeze dryer you have in mind.
Buying a freeze dryer for a candy business would be a questionable business decision at this point. The market is now saturated with endcaps in grocery stores covered in freeze-dried treats, and margins have been driving lower. The lower cost of freeze dryers means competitors pop up more often.
We hit a small snag with the setup, discovering we needed a dedicated power outlet only after the dryer arrived. Luckily an electrician quickly solved the problem for us, but it’s a reminder to prep the space website first.
There is an oil-free pump available for all of the Harvest Right models, but my cost analysis doesn’t support buying it for the additional $1500+. The oil-free pump also runs louder despite its lower maintenance requirements.
Vacuum pumps are crucial because they create the low-pressure environment necessary for sublimation to occur in freeze-drying. They help remove air and moisture from the chamber, allowing for efficient and effective preservation of materials.
